Im just back from the University of Redlands, just outside of Los Angeles, where I spoke at the wonderful Banta Center for Business, Ethics and Society. The topic of my talk there was Responsibilities in the Blogosphere, but the key themes of that talk apply pretty directly to the world of business more generally.

One of the key themes had to do with the tension between a focus on individual decision-making on one hand and a focus on institutional design on the other, between a focus on individual responsibilities and a focus on how Internet giants like Google and Facebook construct online worlds that shape our behaviour.

Theres an awful lot of focus — too much, in my opinion — on individual decision making in ethics. In

Pub’s share of the dining market is growing. Coffer Peach Business Tracker revealed that pub chains outperformed restaurants by approximately 2 per cent in every month except one last year.

The most overtly food-led of the pub chains – Marston’s, Greene King and Mitchell’s & Butlers – continue to increase their bottom line. Pub com

TOKYO (AP) – Japans industrial production rebounded 4 percent in December from November and household spending increased for a second month, suggesting the still-weak economy is gaining some steam after last years tsunami disaster and flooding in Thailand that disrupted manufacturers supply chains.

Output of automobiles, cell phones and semiconductors drove the gains last month after production fell 2.7 percent in November. Manufacturers project further production increases in January and February, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Tuesday.

But Japans unemployment rate edged up to 4.6 percent and Junko Nishioka, economist at RBS Japan Securities, cautioned that the economic outlook was “mixed.”

While she was heartened by the 0.5 percent uptick in family spending, Nishioka said prospects for Japans vital manufacturing sector remained tentative amid weak export demand.

“The pace of recovery will be slow,” she said.

President Barack Obama this month put the so-called Keystone XL Pipeline project on hold so that additional proposed routes could be considered to minimize any environmental threats. Keystone supporters say the project will reduce the United States’ dependence on oil from the Middle East.

“The Keystone XL pipeline will bring thousands of long-term jobs and energy security to the United States, and will be good for the economy, good for national security, and good for Texas,” said Cornyn, R-Texas.

The sponsored by Cornyn and 43 other senators from both parties would authorize TransCanada to construct and operate the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the U.S. Gul
