One of Brighton’s biggest security companies has gone into liquidation almost exactly a year after its previous incarnation did the same.

Sassco (Brighton) Ltd was set up following the liquidation of Sassco Ltd in June 2009, which collapsed owing the taxman more than £250,000.

At the time the chief executive of Sassco (Brighton) Ltd, Eastbourne businessman Clifford Hughes, said the original firmwas owed more than £300,000 and the creditors would be paid back every penny in the pound.

However, on May 28 professional services firm RSM Tenon, which is acting as liquidators for Sassco Ltd, issued a winding-up order against Sassco (Brighton) Ltd.

Sassco (Brighton) Ltd was due to be wound up at the High Court on June 16 but yesterday Mr Hughes appointed Brighton-based insolvency specialist White Maund to begin the process of voluntary liquidation.

It is believed Sassco (Brighton) Ltd’s 140 staff, including doormen working at pubs and clubs across Brighton and Hove, have been taken on by a newcompany, details of which have yet to emerge.

Andrew White, of White Maund, said: “My understanding is that none of the Sassco staff have been made redundant as another business has taken them on.”

He could give no details of this new company while Mr Hughes has refused to comment about the entire affair.

Sassco (Brighton) Ltd also provides security for the Business Improvement District area of the North Laine and The Lanes.

According to Companies House records, Sassco Ltd owed Revenue and Customs £254,550.

Andy Pear, of RSM Tenon, confirmed he was aware of the fact Mr Hughes had applied to go into voluntary liquidation but he admitted it was “unlikely” that he could recover the taxman’s money.
