Jasper Alternate Fuels has become a distributor for a Michigan company that makes alternative-fuel systems for vehicles.

Based in New Hudson, Mich., Icom North America makes the JTG liquid-injection fuel system. This equipment enables vehicles to use liquid propane as a fuel source.

Icom is currently building a nationwide network of distributors who will sell, install and service this equipment, and it has selected Jasper Alternate Fuels as one of its distributors.

Jasper Alternate Fuels is a division of Jasper, Ind.-based Jasper Engines and Transmissions.

Icom’s chairman, Albert Venezio, said Jasper Alternate Fuels will be among the biggest distributors for Icom’s network, which will include about six companies and should be complete by the end of the year.

One factor which made Jasper Alternate Fuels an attractive choice, Venezio said, is that it has a network of more than 40 installation centers already in place across the U.S.

For its part Jasper Alternate Fuels said it was interested in the deal because the alternative-energy field is a growth market.

Mike Pfau, advertising manager for Jasper Engines and Transmissions, said the company’s alternative fuels division is already a distributor for two other companies, Prins and Bigas.

“We’re finding a fair amount of success with fleet accounts,” Pfau said.

Fleet managers are the ones most interested in alternative fuels, Pfau said, in part because the potential fuel savings are so significant.

Icom’s Venezio said propane typically sells for about $1 a gallon less than gasoline or diesel fuel. That adds up quickly for fleet vehicles because they rack up so many miles, he said.

Icom has installed its JTG liquid-injection fuel system on 100,000 vehicles worldwide, Pfau said, but that includes only about 5,000 vehicles in the U.S.

To Jasper Alternate Fuels, those numbers add up to growth potential.

“It seems like there’s a lot of opportunity,” Pfau said.

Icom’s Venezio said his company’s goal is to install its alternative fuel systems on 10,000 new U.S. vehicles per year. Venezio said the company aims to achieve this goal within about 18 months. After that, the company hopes to grow this number by 25 percent a year.
