By day he is a businessman.

But after hours Phil Edwards devotes his time to building a unique electric- powered motorbike which he hopes will smash the UK drag-racing record.

The company director is transforming a standard motorbike into a batterypowered racing machine in time for next year’s Alternative Energy Racing event at Santa Pod, the home of European drag racing in Milton Keynes.

The prototype project has become so big that Phil, who runs Weald Business Solutions, which helps other organisations cut costs and improve efficiency, has set up a new company to take it on and ultimately hopes to sell the skills developed to people in the same field.

The cost is expected to be £10,000 and Phil is inviting firms interested in being associated with the project to offer support.

Power Phil, who has a background in engineering and manufacturing, said: “What most people are doing at Santa Pod at the moment is making bikes out of golf trolleys and using heavy lead oxide car batteries which don’t have a huge amount of power.

“We have gone for the most modern batteries, tiny little things that weigh less but yield a huge amount of power.

“We are using ex-development parts and have to be at the top end of what is being developed to go into the competitive field.”

The UK record over a standing start quartermile race is just under 15 seconds at 95 miles an hour. Phil’s challenge is to hit 12 seconds at 120 miles an hour, but after further developments, he aims to get below ten seconds.

Phil, who lives in Olives Meadow, Uckfield, with his wife Sue and children Ben and Lucie, added: “I know someone else is trying for ten seconds so this is a serious challenge.”

Companies interested in investing in the project can call Phil on 01825 761890.
