Security is often reported as one of the top concerns or barriers to cloud adoption for businesses. To help dispel this perception, today Microsoft released research that shows that small and medium sized businesses (SMB) are gaining significant IT security benefits from using the cloud.

The study, which was commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by research company comScore, polled SMB companies in the U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, India and Hong Kong markets.

The U.S. findings show benefits in three main areas:

  • Time Savings: 32 percent of U.S. companies say they spend less time worrying about the threat of cyber-attacks.
  • Money Savings: SMBs that use the cloud are nearly 6x more likely to have decreased the total amount spent on security than SMBs not using the cloud.
  • Improved Security: 35 percent of U.S.

AUSTIN (AP) – Whole Foods Market Inc.’s second-quarter profit jumped nearly 31 percent on stronger sales at its chain of natural and organic grocery stores. The company raised its full-year outlook on the results and its shares jumped in after-hours trading Wednesday.

The company, based in Austin, is an industry standout. It was hard-hit by the recession but quickly retooled by cutting debt, closing stores, increasing its emphasis on lower-priced options and returning its focus to healthful food. Those moves continue to pay off for the chain.

Whole Foods co-founder and co-CEO John Mackey said Wednesday that this was the best quarter in the company’s 32-year history.

The grocer earned $117.7 million, or 64 cents per share, for the quarter that ended April 8.

A recent story in the NY Times provides some encouraging anecdotes about companies that are moving to take greater responsibility for recycling. Companies like Starbucks and Coca-Cola, for instance, are finding new — and in some cases profitable — ways to take responsibility for the waste that their product packaging generally becomes. More recycling generally means less waste, less energy used, and less pollution.

Waste and pollution are business-ethics topics about which there is some room for agreement between the moralist and the economist. The moralist points out that its unfair to make innocent bystanders suffer the ill effects of your factorys pollution. The

DALLAS (AP) – American Airlines told employees Wednesday that it will freeze pensions for most workers instead of terminating them, as the company reorganizes under bankruptcy protection.

The freeze will apply to flight attendants and ground workers but not to pilots. The pilots’ pension plan includes a lump-sum payment upon retirement, and the company fears a surge in retirements would leave it without enough pilots to operate.

The decision to freeze instead of terminate pensions was a surprise. American hopes that the gesture will push labor unions to go along with other cost-cutting steps.

Last month American said it would terminate pension plans for 130,000 current and retired employees and hand over the plans’ assets and obligations for future payments to a government agency.

The airline’s unions and the U.S.
