Small business owners are aware of the benefits of using social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, and even YouTube. But one consistently overlooked social media site that is ripe with potential for promoting your small business is on the photography social media site, Flickr.

What is Flickr?

Simply put, Flickr is a Yahoo! website that allows members to upload and share photographs. Accounts are free to sign up, but free accounts are only allotted 100 uploads. More about their paid “Pro” account is explained below.

But more than that, it is a community website where the social factor is enhanced by images, usually stunning visual photographs posted by millions of enthusiastic amateur and professional photographers.

LAS VEGAS — U.S. Rep. Joe Barton of Texas planned to introduce a federal bill Friday to legalize online poker, hoping to pull the estimated $6 billion industry out of the shadows at a time when its top operators face serious legal troubles.

The Republican lawmaker told The Associated Press that the bill would let states choose whether they want to allow residents to play poker on the Internet, and require operators to already have gambling licenses in at least one U.S. state.

A law passed in 2006 barred financial institutions from processing illegal gambling payments, but many have complained since then that it didn’t outlaw playing poker and didn’t define well enough exactly what is permissible.

The Justice Department in April indicted executives and payment processors of online poker’s three biggest companies — PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker. The

Many retailers underestimate the impact that gift cards can have on their profit margins. Gift cards are often viewed as a pain – yet another little detail that a business owner has to deal with. But in reality, they often equal free money for you and your business!

Think of it this way: these days, in what is still quite a tenuous economy, the best gift of all is money. That’s why customers like to buy and give gift cards. For those purchasing them, it saves the trouble of thinking about what to get their friend or loved one. For those receiving the card, it’s a gift of free money for their favorite store. But what’s in it for you, the business owner?

For starters, every gift card you sell gives your business an influx of cash, without having to give anything away. Boosting your bottom line without losing anything in return is a great thing for any business. Now, add on the possibility that not all gift cards get redeemed, and you’re looking at free money. In effect, you collect payment without providing a service or merchandise when those gift cards fall by the wayside.

Offering gift cards is a great way for your business to set itself apart from the competition while also opening yourself up to new customers. Let’s say a current customer purchases a gift card and gives it to a friend of theirs for her birthday. If the recipient has never yet shopped at your store, they’re equivalent to a new customer.

Because they have a gift card to spend, they’re likely to come in and have a look around. If they like what they see, they’re likely to spend the amount given on their gift card, and then some. On average, gift receivers spend more than the value of their card. Even better, if they like their experience in your store, they’re likely to return. This means your business has gained a customer with no extra legwork or money put out by you. Best of all, gift cards give friends a chance not only to discuss your business, but recommend it.

Regardless of the size of your business, big or small, gift cards are a great idea and a great opportunity for your company to increase its bottom line. Your merchant service provider can help you set up a gift card program in which transactions are handled by a credit card processing terminal, making implementation and tracking simple. In short, the addition of gift cards, while making a big change to your income, won’t require a big change in terms of the payment processing systems you already have in place.

Gift cards mean lots of gain for very little effort on the part of the business owner, making them a great idea for a wide range of retailers and business owners. Gift cards are the gift that keeps on giving, turning a piece of plastic into free money, new customers, and continuing business.

If you think American Express caters only to the affluent think again.

In an effort to serve a growing industry it’s rolling out its first prepaid card for the general market.

I was a bit surprised myself but it’s obvious that with the success of its Pass prepaid card that launched last year Amex got a taste of this market and now wants to take a much bigger bite.

Now this new card is not a debit card and it’s not a credit card. It’s a prepaid, reloadable card that you can use as a way to control spending.

While prepaid cards like Account Now and Black Diamond have its unique benefits like credit building the American Express Prepaid Card has a few benefits up its sleeve too.

One in particular is its reduced fees and compared to other prepaid cards it is definitely a plus.

I know what youre thinking. Oh great, here comes more marketing work my waythanks Ryan. Well, Im sorry to say that I do have more to throw at you, but these tips will be worth your while. As some of you know, my companies approach to marketing is all about building relationships online, and social networking is the key to it all! The best part is you dont have to leave the house (but it does help).

These four social networks Ive personally been getting a good ROI with both for my business, and for my clients. A lot of your efforts may not lead to a home sale, but they sure can lead to a link or a strategic business partnership that was definitely worth the effort. Besides the social networking aspect, there is of course room to score some links and traffic out of it as well!
